Bruce Springsteen’s Catholicism and Lamb & Potatoes

What I Learnt:

Bruce Springsteen is one of my favourite songwriters. There’s something about his lyrics that makes you feel sad and happy at the same time. When you listen to a Springsteen song, you not only think that the characters he sings about are real people with real struggles, but somehow he makes you feel that they were part of your life too. It is like he is singing about you, your friends, your family and your past.

Anyway, this post isn’t a laboured tribute to Springsteen’s songwriting capabilities. It is actually about his relationship with religion.

In his autobiography Born to Run, he talks about how while he isn’t a practising catholic, he still retains some beliefs and values. I really liked his statement, “I don't participate in my religion but I know somewhere, deep inside, I'm still on the team.".

As someone who has often thought about the philosophy of Epicurus, the logical appeal of Deitisim and the peripheral role, at least in my opinion, that religion has to play in the existential challenges humankind faces, it was heartening to learn that even someone as gifted with words as Bruce Springsteen doesn’t have the answers.

What Made Me Happy:

Lamb and potatoes. Or for that matter, red meat and potatoes. Is there a better food combination that is earthy, soulful and so bloody satisfying?

Hmmm. This needs further consideration before I am 100% sure. Perhaps something with bacon? I need to give this more thought.

We will return to this topic. I promise!
